CHAPTER 24

Nimitz Library, USNA

November 11, 2020 at 2140

Alex had three exams left to take for the twelve-week academic period. Chemistry would be tough and he wasn’t ready. He thought his instructor for Rhetoric needed to improve his own rhetoric. With Seamanship, the only thing he gave a shit about was wanting sailors to know how to steer an amphibious landing craft and deliver Marines on a beachhead.

At least thirty midshipmen were working quietly in the library’s public area. Alex flipped open his laptop, checked for email, and saw several new messages in his inbox. One from his father. Rear Admiral David Kramer was coming to Annapolis Friday afternoon. Maybe they could meet for dinner at the Naval Academy Club. An email from his sister, Victoria. Four years older than her brother, Tori Kramer was an acquisitions editor with a major book publishing house in midtown Manhattan. She was in a slow-dance relationship with a New York City fireman and it sounded serious.

Then he opened an email from his mother, checking in on him the way she did every other week since I-Day: “Plebe life still okay?” wrote Olivia. “What about your flashbacks? Is there a place there where Mids can talk about problems? And nothing gets written up in their personnel records?” He’d answer her tonight. Alex had plebe life under control. Little fazed him. As for getting help with flashbacks and nightmares? He was still working on that with Lieutenant Commander Forgash, and appreciated getting her professional medical advice.

Alex smiled at one unexpected new message. The sender’s email address was [email protected]—Eddie Arsenault checking in. A year ago, Arsenault made staff sergeant and received orders to Parris Island as a Small Arms Weapons Instructor. Alex opened Arsenault’s email:

How’s life at the Naval Academy? Anyone there teach you what to do if a pigeon craps on your summer whites while you’re saluting an officer? LOL. Life’s good back here at recruit basic training Shangri-La. Remember boot camp when we took bets our DI, Gunnery Sergeant Lopez, was abused as a child? The female DIs here are scarier than Lopez. I’ll get up to Annapolis sometime to check up on you. Remember, you promised our platoon you wouldn’t go soft and take a commission in the Navy. If you do, I’m coming to kick your ass. Take care, Kramer.

OORAH!
